Hello… Ferda Kolatan

How do you think we will organize ourselves for the future office / workplace?

The future office will be increasingly non-central, non-local, and non-hierarchical. Place and time have become less important since the new media tools have been available to all of us. This trend will continue exponentially into the near future. Collaborations will be routinely based on interests, issues, and economics rather than proximity or space. Designing, planning, and fabrication/construction will be facilitated by optimized channels of information flow based on technology. While most of these developments are positive, there are problems as well. Local character and authenticity will suffer further and processes of optimization may override more delicate and customized solutions.

How do you create good working environment?

A good working environment hinges strongly on the quality of collaborations. Putting together a strong team and enabling its members to draw from their personal strength is a key aspect. Another important factor is to create an atmosphere within which ideas can freely flow before being subjected to questions of feasibility, economy, and practicality. In our office we strive to develop ideas and concepts initially in a subjective and speculative fashion. Only when the ideas begin to take form and stabilize do we begin to test them against constraints in order to create a robust product. We believe that a certain amount of preliminary autonomy is necessary for good design to emerge.

Give an example of a new product you think will change our working environment in the future.

Desktop 3D printers will change the way design practices operate in a fundamental way. This tool is more than just a model-building device. It will allow even the most modest offices and teams to engage in relevant design research exploring intricate solutions for specific design applications. The immediacy of producing physical manifestations of even the most complex ideas will be an invaluable tool for the testing and refinement of future prototypes.
